Stories Behind the Image

Every photograph in The Morii Collection began as a fleeting moment that could never be repeated. Here, the artists share the stories behind their images—the people, places, and circumstances that led to each photograph. Discover the moments behind the moment and the experiences that transformed them into lasting works of art.

“One afternoon in Soho Square, London, I noticed a young woman sitting on a bench, her shoes boldly proclaiming, “Punk Is Not Dead.” That striking message caught my eye. I asked her if I could take a photograph—and that small detail became the story of this shot: a fleeting statement of defiance and identity captured in a single frame.”

“As evening settled over the Cilo Mountains, the golden light illuminated a field of yellow flowers. I felt drawn to step into the blossoms myself, and as I looked around, I saw others wandering through the same beauty. Behind us, the mountains rose in majestic grandeur; before us, people moved through the glowing light — a scene both stirring and unforgettable.”

“The reins rest on the horse’s body, worn and shaped by time and use. In São Gabriel, southern Brazil, a silent story emerges in this tangle of ropes connecting man, animal, and labor. A detail that carries tradition—where everyday work sustains an entire culture.”

“I’ve always found the silence of snow different from ordinary silence. The Japanese use the onomatopoeia “shinshin” to describe the sound of snow falling deeply and silently. It is the absence of sound where there was sound before.

This photograph was taken on a cold January morning in Atlanta, GA after I woke up to a rare heavy southern snowfall. As the sun was just beginning to rise, I bundled up and ventured out, trying to capture the beauty, silence, and wonder of the moment before it was gone.”

“A Buddhist monk opens a train window after boarding at Bangkok’s historic railway station, a place that has been slowly emptying as it nears its closure. This accidental moment feels like a religious blessing, yet it could be a capture of a more practical candid moment.”

“It was a very hot day at Coogee Beach Sydney. I noticed a hive of activity in one of the beach pools. The young boys were taking turns jumping into the ocean from the edge of the pool. I held my camera up and suddenly one of the boys leapt high into the air spreading out his arms and legs.”
